Engineered wood flooring in a Calgary, AB home

What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood flooring?

Most of us are familiar with solid hardwood flooring, but many still haven?t been introduced to another wood floor version. Engineered wood floors are taking a significant share of the wood flooring industry because they appeal to Calgary homeowners, who want beauty and practicality. Read further to learn more.

The difference is in the construction

While solid is one thickness throughout, engineered hardwood is layered. At the top is your species of choice; some of the most popular ones are oak, hickory, cherry, maple, and walnut. This layer has the undertones, grains, and knots we've all come to expect. Underneath are three or more genuine wood layers, combined with a little resin, and then placed in a crosswise position. This is what gives it stability and an increased desire to handle water.

Engineered has more installation possibilities in higher-than-normal moisture areas, such as Calgary basements, where solid cannot be installed. It also doesn?t need acclimation. As most of us know, wood can be affected by humidity, with solid wood expanding or shrinking with humidity changes. Acclimation is a relatively simple procedure but necessary; without it, cupping, crowning and warping will occur, but engineered doesn?t move.

Thicker is better

Whether solid or engineered, thickness determines how many times the floor can be sanded. The ideal for solid is ?-inch, and it can be sanded up to six times. Engineered ranges from ?-inch to ?-inch with sometimes five or more layers. Depending on thickness, it can be sanded up to five times.

All wood floors add value to a property, and installation can be different between the two. Solid is a tongue and groove with nail-down. Subfloor restoration and repair, with moisture readings, is a necessity. Engineered wood can be a floating floor that is uncomplicated. Pieces click together then hover over the subfloor.
