How to clean laminate flooring

Here?s how to keep your floors looking and performing great for a long time.

Prevention is always better than cure

Keep your laminate floors dust-free to avoid scratches by sweeping them every day with a soft broom or dry mop.? Be sure to get under counters and in corners so dirt can?t hide. (Microfibers are best since they collect dirt and dust and can be washed, dried, and reused.)? Sometimes vacuuming might be better and faster but be sure to use an attachment meant for hard surfaces (and no beater bars!)

You want to do this every day because foot traffic can grind dirt and dust into the surface.? It?s also necessary to do this before any spot cleaning; if dirt gets left, it embeds on the rag used to spot clean and act like sandpaper.

Use a manufacturer-approved cleaner

Walk down a supermarket aisle, and you?ll see tons of cleaners but talk to us first so you can be sure of getting the right one.? You can also make your own; it sounds a little counterintuitive, but a little rubbing alcohol is not only gentle enough for this but also speeds up evaporation. Keep in mind that laminate is made from wood byproducts, so you want to avoid excess moisture.

Here?s the cleaning recipe:? 2 cups warm water; 1/2 cup white vinegar; 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol; 1/8 tsp gentle dishwashing liquid that doesn't contain bleach, oils, or moisturizers);? 5-10 drops of essential oil or lemon juice. The latter is optional to mask any unpleasant odors (plus citrus anything is a good cleaner.)? Make sure the mop is well-rung and avoid abrasive brushes or steel wool pads.
