Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing new flooring should be exciting, but with so many products, styles and price points available, it can also feel a little overwhelming. At Westvalley Carpet & Flooring, we're here to make the process easier. Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.
About Westvalley Carpet & Flooring
We carry a wide selection of flooring for virtually every room, style and budget, including carpet, hardwood, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), luxury vinyl tile (LVT), laminate, sheet vinyl and tile. Westvalley Carpet & Flooring is also Calgary's only Mohawk Design Center retailer, giving our customers access to an extensive selection of Mohawk flooring, along with products from many of the industry's other leading manufacturers. If you're not sure where to start, don't worry – tell us about your home, how the space is used, the look you like and your budget, and we'll help narrow down the options.
Yes. Professional flooring installation is a big part of what we do. Choosing a good product is important, but how it's installed matters just as much. Our team can look after your project from measuring and estimating through to scheduling and professional installation. We'll also identify any floor preparation or other work that may be required before installation so you know what to expect.
Yes. We help homeowners with everything from replacing flooring in a single room to complete-home renovations and new construction. Westvalley is also a leading flooring supplier to the commercial, government and insurance restoration sectors. Our size and experience allow us to handle larger and more complex projects while still providing the personal service you'd expect from a local Calgary company.
There are plenty of places to buy flooring in Calgary. We believe the difference is the experience and support you receive along the way. Westvalley has grown to become one of the largest flooring companies in Western Canada, and we're proud to be:
- Calgary's only Mohawk Design Center retailer
- A four-time national award-winning flooring retailer
- A co-partner in Costco's flooring program
- A leading flooring supplier to the insurance restoration industry
- A trusted supplier for government and commercial flooring projects
- One of Canada's most highly reviewed flooring companies
We're proud of those accomplishments, but our approach to flooring is still pretty simple. We listen to what you need, give you straightforward advice, help you choose the right product and make sure it's installed properly. That's how we've built our business, and it's how we continue to take care of our customers today.
The biggest difference is that flooring is all we do. Products that look very similar can perform quite differently once they're installed. Construction, fibres, wear layers, locking systems, underlay, warranties and the condition of the floor underneath can all make a difference. Our team works with these products every day. We can help you look beyond the colour and price tag and understand what you're actually buying and whether it's right for your home. And because of Westvalley's size and industry relationships, you get the selection and buying power of a large flooring company combined with the knowledge and service of a local flooring specialist.
Estimates & Shopping
Absolutely. We'll help measure your space and look at the details that can affect the project, including stairs, transitions, existing flooring and any floor preparation that may be required. Once we understand the space and you've selected your flooring, we can provide an estimate so you have a clear understanding of the scope of the project and the expected cost.
Yes. Westvalley offers a shop-at-home service for customers who would prefer to start the process in their own home. Seeing flooring in the room where it will actually be installed can be very helpful. Natural light, wall colours, cabinetry, countertops and furniture can all change how a flooring sample looks. We can help you narrow down the choices and compare suitable options in your own space.
Of course. In fact, we encourage it. Take the samples home and look at them next to your walls, cabinets, furniture and other finishes. It's also a good idea to look at them at different times of day because lighting can make a surprising difference. We'd much rather have you take a little extra time choosing your floor than rush into a decision.
Absolutely. Browsing online is a great way to get ideas and narrow down the colours, styles and types of flooring you like. We still recommend seeing your final choices in person whenever possible, since colours, textures and wood grains don't always look the same on a screen as they do in your home. Browse online, save the things you like and bring your ideas to us – we'll help you take it from there.
You don't need to bring anything, but photos of your space are always helpful. If you have paint colours, cabinet or countertop samples, approximate measurements or inspiration photos, bring those along too. And if you have no idea what you're looking for yet, that's completely fine – helping you figure that out is part of our job.
Choosing the Right Flooring
We usually start with a simple question: how do you use the room? Do you have children or pets? Is it a busy part of the house? Is it a basement? Is easy maintenance important? Do you prefer something warm and comfortable or something extremely durable? And, of course, what's your budget? Once we understand those things, it becomes much easier to narrow down your choices. There isn't one floor that's best for everybody – the goal is to find the floor that's best for your home and the way you live in it.
For busy households, we generally look for flooring that's durable, easy to maintain and appropriate for the amount of traffic it will receive. Luxury vinyl, laminate and certain engineered hardwood products can all be excellent choices. Today's stain-resistant carpets can also perform extremely well in active homes. Rather than recommending the same floor to everyone, we'll ask a few questions about your household and help you find something that fits.
This is one we hear all the time. For most pet owners, durability, scratch resistance and easy cleaning are high on the list. Luxury vinyl and certain laminate products are popular choices, and some engineered hardwoods can also work very well. Carpet shouldn't automatically be ruled out either – today's carpet fibres offer much better stain resistance than many people expect, while also providing comfort and helping reduce noise. Tell us about your pets and how they use the space, and we'll help you find a practical option.
Definitely. Carpet is still hard to beat when you're looking for warmth, comfort and a quieter room. It's particularly popular in bedrooms, family rooms, stairs and basements. Modern carpet has also come a long way in terms of durability, stain resistance, colours and textures. The important part is choosing the right carpet and underpad for the room where it's being installed.
For many homes, yes. Luxury vinyl plank has become extremely popular because it's attractive, durable, easy to maintain and offers excellent moisture resistance. But there are significant differences between LVP products – the core, wear layer, locking system, backing and overall construction all matter, as does the condition of the floor underneath. We'll help you look beyond colour and price and choose a product that's appropriate for where it's being installed.
They can look similar, but they're constructed differently. Luxury vinyl is a resilient flooring product and generally offers excellent moisture resistance. Laminate has a different layered construction, and today's better laminate products can offer outstanding scratch resistance and very realistic wood looks. Both can be great choices – instead of saying one is always better, we'd rather compare the specific products you're considering and determine which one makes the most sense for your home.
Solid hardwood is made from a solid piece of wood. Engineered hardwood has a genuine hardwood surface with multiple layers underneath, which provides additional dimensional stability. Both offer the warmth, beauty and natural character of real wood. Engineered hardwood can be particularly well suited to environments where temperature and humidity change throughout the year, but the right choice depends on your home, the room and the installation.
Flooring in Calgary
It can, particularly when it comes to real wood. Calgary's winters can be extremely dry, and indoor humidity levels can change considerably throughout the year. Because wood is a natural material, it reacts to those changes. Choosing an appropriate product, installing it correctly and maintaining reasonable humidity levels in your home can make a big difference. It's also one of the advantages of working with a local flooring company – we understand Calgary's climate and how different flooring products perform here.
It depends on how you plan to use the basement. Luxury vinyl is a popular choice when moisture resistance, durability and easy maintenance are priorities. Carpet remains a favourite when homeowners want their basement to feel warmer, softer and more comfortable. Before making a recommendation, we'll also consider the concrete, subfloor and any potential moisture issues – the right basement floor isn't simply about choosing a product, it's about looking at the whole space.
Sometimes, but not always. Some luxury vinyl products already have backing attached. Others allow or require a separate underlay. More underlay isn't necessarily better – in fact, using the wrong underlay can cause problems with some flooring systems. We'll make sure the flooring, underlay and installation method work properly together and meet the manufacturer's requirements.
Yes. Many flooring products can be successfully installed over concrete. The important thing is making sure the concrete is suitable first – moisture, flatness and the overall condition of the floor all need to be considered. Sometimes preparation is required before the new flooring is installed. You won't see that preparation when the job is finished, but it's one of the most important parts of getting a good result.
Absolutely. There are beautiful hardwood floors in homes throughout Calgary. The key is choosing an appropriate product, installing it properly and understanding how changing indoor humidity can affect natural wood. Engineered hardwood is often worth considering because of its added stability, but both engineered and solid hardwood can be good options depending on the home.
Installation
It depends on the size of your project, the flooring you've selected and how much preparation is required. A straightforward carpet or flooring replacement can often be completed fairly quickly. A full home, stairs, hardwood, tile or a project requiring significant floor preparation will naturally take longer. Once we've seen the space and understand the project, we'll give you a realistic idea of what to expect.
That depends on the project. When your installation is scheduled, we'll explain what needs to be moved and what options are available. We generally recommend removing smaller personal belongings, electronics, artwork, valuables and fragile items before the installers arrive. We'll go through everything with you ahead of time so there aren't any surprises on installation day.
In many cases, the existing flooring needs to be removed before your new floor is installed. We can discuss removal and disposal as part of your estimate. Once the old flooring is removed, we can also inspect the floor underneath – if something needs to be repaired or prepared before the new flooring goes down, we'll explain what we've found and what needs to be done.
Because even a great flooring product won't perform properly if the surface underneath isn't suitable. Depending on the project, preparation may involve patching, leveling, securing loose areas or correcting irregularities in the existing floor. Different flooring products have different installation requirements. It's not the most exciting part of buying a new floor, and you won't see it when we're finished, but proper preparation is a very important part of doing the job right.
We'll go over the details of your installation before the scheduled date. Generally, the work area should be accessible and smaller belongings and fragile items should already be removed. Our installers will prepare the area, complete the installation and take care of the finishing work included in your project. If there's anything you need to do beforehand, we'll make sure you know well in advance.
Insurance & Restoration Flooring
Yes. This is an important part of our business and an area where we have extensive experience. Westvalley is a leading flooring supplier to the insurance restoration industry. Replacing flooring after water damage, fire or another insured loss is different from a typical renovation – there may be several parties involved, including the homeowner, restoration contractor, adjuster and insurance company. We understand that process. Our team can assist with product identification, flooring selection, estimates, documentation, replacement options, scheduling and installation while working with the other parties involved in the claim. Our goal is to make the flooring portion of your restoration as straightforward as possible.
We'll certainly try. Our team can help identify the existing flooring and determine whether the same product is still available. Flooring styles and product lines change over time, so an exact match isn't always possible, and there can also be differences between manufacturing runs. If the original product isn't available, we'll help identify suitable alternatives and explain the options available to you.
Commercial & Government Flooring
Yes. Commercial flooring is a significant part of our business. As one of Western Canada's larger flooring companies, Westvalley has the experience and installation capacity to handle projects ranging from smaller commercial spaces to large and more complex flooring installations. We work with businesses, builders, property managers, restoration companies and other commercial clients. Commercial flooring involves more than choosing a durable product – scheduling, safety, communication, installation capacity and meeting project timelines are all important, and our team understands those requirements.
Yes. Westvalley is a leading flooring supplier to the government sector and has experience working within the requirements of larger institutional and public-sector projects. These projects often involve specific product, safety, documentation, scheduling and installation requirements. Our commercial team understands those expectations and can coordinate the flooring portion of the project from estimating and product selection through installation.
Absolutely. We understand that professional clients have different needs. Product availability, accurate estimating, communication, reliable scheduling and getting installations completed when promised are all important. Tell us about your project, requirements and timeline, and we'll work with you to determine the best approach.
Costco Flooring
Yes. Westvalley is proud to be a co-partner in Costco's flooring program. Our involvement reflects the scale, experience and installation capabilities we've developed over the years while allowing us to provide Costco members with professional flooring services backed by an established Calgary flooring company. Contact us if you'd like more information about the program and how it works.
Warranties & Care
All of the products we carry include manufacturer warranties, although coverage varies by flooring type and manufacturer. We'll explain the warranty that applies to the product you're considering, along with any installation, care or environmental requirements you should know about. We believe it's better to understand those details before you choose your flooring rather than after there's a problem.
That depends on the flooring you've selected. The best approach is always to follow the manufacturer's care recommendations for your particular product. Generally, keeping dirt and grit off the floor, cleaning spills promptly and using proper furniture protectors will help keep your flooring looking its best. Be careful with cleaning products too – stronger doesn't always mean better, and some cleaners can damage certain flooring finishes. If you're ever unsure about what to use, just ask us.
