Winter, burst pipes and flooring in Calgary

Long, freezing, snowy, and windy winters are no surprise to residents of Calgary, and that?s exactly why you need waterproof flooring. Calgary residents can even see snow as late as June and as early as September.

The temperature goes below zero, and that can result in burst pipes, which leads to flood damage. We know of someone who, in several days of sub-zero weather, experienced a burst pipe. It damaged the entire living room and continued to a nearby bedroom.

Thousands of dollars were spent making repairs and replacing the destroyed furnishings and flooring.

What exactly is it?

This flooring is a recent version of luxury vinyl (LVF) with an advanced core, WPC (wood plastic composite). The core offers the highest level of waterproof and moisture protection.

You get all the same style of LVF, which is the realistic appearance of wood, plastic, and stone, at an affordable price. Because of modern technology, the images are clear and defined, displaying all the knots, swirls, raised grains and veining of the real thing. There is a wide variety of species, colors, patterns, and designs.

Embossing gives it a hand-scraped, wire-brushed, distressed or antiqued look and it?s available in matte and gloss finishes.

Howling winds create leaks

Calgary has a prairie-like climate so there are strong winds at any time of the year. We don?t usually associate winds with water damage, but a strong wind at just the right angle can damage the roof and chimney flashing.

Melting snow and ice requires your flooring to be waterproof

Even when it?s at its coldest, you need sunglasses. The sun is frequently shining and creates melted snow. That?s even more reason to have waterproof protection for your flooring.

Snow harms your home by:

?Being tracked in on the soles of your shoes.

?Being heavy on the roof which can also result in broken shingles and cracked fireplaces.

?Accumulating on walls and windows. If windows are improperly sealed, the melted snow can seep through and cause leaks.

?Collecting in drainpipes and, when melted, causing excess water to seep into roof shingles. It then goes into small leaks in the attic where it can soak insulation and create the start of mold growth.
