Tile flooring in Calgary: what to use, when

Ceramic and porcelain can both work for floors, but have different characteristics that make them behave differently in certain installations.?When shopping for tile flooring in Calgary, be sure to tell the tile pros in our tile flooring store exactly how it will be used.

Whether you?re looking for something for your house or a commercial facility, Westvalley is the place to go for AB flooring.

Porcelain is best suited for high traffic floors

Porcelain is a type of ceramic, but it?s composition also includes sand and glass. It?s also fired at higher temperatures than most clay materials, making it denser and heavier. As a result, you?ll see it on kitchen and bathroom floors, and anywhere there?s a lot of heavy activity.

Porcelain is waterproof, whether or not it?s glazed. Of special interest for Calgary residents, it's also frost-proof. That means you can use it or deck floors, on walkways, or anywhere outside.

It is available in many colors and patterns. All tile can be made to look like anything, from wood to stone to leather. Many prefer porcelain for stone looks because it's a large format tile (sometimes going as big as 8 X 10) which means fewer seams. Many feel that gives it a more continuous look of a quarried slab, especially of marble.

Ceramics: tough and thin

A ceramic tile square is thinner, made solely of clay, and is best for lower traffic floors.

They can be glazed or unglazed; the glazing makes them waterproof and gives them a tough outer shell. They aren?t frost-proof, so best to keep them inside. Highly decorative, you?ll also see them as backsplashes and floor medallions.

They come in an assortment of colors, patterns, designs, shapes, and sizes and can also be made to look like wood, stone, or anything else.

All tile is easy to clean, durable, and versatile enough to look great in any room in the house. They are considered one of the most affordable flooring materials. Mixed and matched them to create unique designs and also different price points.
